Small Animal Physiotherapy
Charlotte Wood Dip.APhysio, Cert HSA, RCH, IAAT

Charlotte is the in-house physiotherapist for House of Hydro.

Her rehabilitation journey began in 2020 following an interest in working with small animals, particularly in canine care. Through qualifying and working as a hydrotherapist she knew she wanted to further develop her knowledge and skill set, so in 2022 began training to become a small animal physiotherapist, graduating in early 2025.

Over the years, she has been incredibly lucky to work with hundreds of patients, each one leaving a lasting memory. She enjoys treating a wide variety of cases but has a keen interest in orthopaedic post-operative care, neurological cases and osteoarthritis.

Charlotte’s approach to rehabilitation is calm and compassionate, supporting all patients she treats whatever the temperament from the very shy and nervous to more guarded. Providing a relaxed environment in which all patients receive the same level of care, she makes a bond of trust with each patient to ensure they are comfortable in the treatment space.

Having grown up with her childhood Labrador Cracker, she is now lucky to be a part of your pets pack. Charlotte is also qualified in K-laser therapy, the use of electro modalities and advanced under water treadmill techniques, all of which may be utilised as part of your pets physiotherapy session. She is a member of the International Association of Animal Therapists (IAAT) and the National Association of Registered Canine Hydrotherapists (NARCH) and each year commits to continued professional development.

What is physiotherapy?

Small animal physiotherapy focuses on enhancing the mobility, function and overall well-being of your pet through various combinations of techniques.

Our aim is for your pet to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Have you noticed any of the following in your pet?

  • Have they slowed down recently?
  • Do they no longer jump on the sofa or avoid the stairs?
  • Have they stopped looking forward to a walk?
  • Are they slow to rise in the morning?
  • Have they become less tolerant of touch?

If so, physiotherapy may be what they need.

What conditions can be supported with physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy can help to rehabilitate many conditions including:

What to expect in a physiotherapy session

A small animal physiotherapist will first assess a number of factors:

This will then advice on the best course of treatment for your pets individual needs.

A session may include any of the following treatments

Massage

Massage is a gentle, hands-on connective treatment technique that helps to reduce tension and stiffness, reduce muscular fasciculations and improve blood flow and oxygenation, provide lymphatic drainage and improve flexibility and joint range of motion.

Most sessions if appropriate will start with this to relax your pet.

Techniques may include effleurage, petrissage, trigger point work, myofascial release, mobilisation and passive stretching.

Therapeutic exercises and home programmes

An essential part of physiotherapy is targeted and structured exercises supporting the relevant condition. These aim to support improving your pets mobility and strength, coordination, balance, flexibility and general function.

Exercises may include the use of equipment such a blocks, wobble cushions and pole work. Controlled therapeutic exercises for static and dynamic work, weight shifting, core strengthening, passive and active range of motion and neurological proprioceptive training.

* Home lifestyle and exercise programmes given for the individual patient relevant to their condition and progress. Helping to support both the patient and client in between sessions. All exercises will be demonstrated in pets session and gone through with the owner.

Electrotherapies

The use of electrotherapies such as Pulse Electro Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF). This non-invasive magnetic field helps to reduce pain, inflammation, relax muscles and increase oxygenation and blood flow circulation to tissues. Different wave lengths and frequencies support varying conditions with a therapeutic effect upon the cells, stimulating the body’s natural healing process.
